A taste of the weekend’s Halloween festivities…

Angeleno crowds swelled to fill the streets of West Hollywood on Friday night for the city’s annual Halloween Costume Carnaval.  Sarah Palin and Joe the Plumber were out in full force, and Joe the Serial Killer made an appearance too.  People were out and about with a mission to see and be seen, but the mood was surprisingly mellow. I guess that’s the California way. LAist.com grabbed some of my flickr photos.

Unfortunately I forgot my camera for Saturday nights’s Dia de Los Muertos festivities in the Hollywood Cemetery, but it was a memorable scene.  I had never been to a Day of the Dead event, and was fascinated by the colorful ceremonial tributes, offerings, and trinkets adorning. Some were quiet, humble altars and others magnificent sculptural displays of music and life.  Some invited you ‘in’ to participate, others were meant to be viewed from a distance.  Despite the festive music and dancing, as the face-painted crowds floated throughout the cemetery, there was an eerie aura that lingered throughout the night.  Super tall, skinny palm trees glowed and towered over the smoky scene- only enhanced by the rain (gasp) earlier in the day.
